Goodwood at the end of July is one of the trickiest meetings in the calendar to bet on. Five days, three Group 1s, a 2m Cup, a 5f Group 2 and a 6f handicap with up to 28 runners. The track is right-handed, undulating and mostly downhill, and the draw and the pace decide more races here than at any other major meeting.

When and where

Goodwood Racecourse sits on the South Downs about five miles north of Chichester, West Sussex. The main meeting was established in 1802 and the course is still controlled by the Duke of Richmond’s family. The festival is officially the Qatar Goodwood Festival and runs over five days from Tuesday to Saturday at the turn of July into August.

The 2027 dates are confirmed by the course as Tuesday 27 to Saturday 31 July. The course publishes a provisional timetable closer to the meeting; check it for gates and first-race times.

The day structure in 2026 was: Goodwood Cup Day (Tuesday), Sussex Stakes Day (Wednesday), Ladies’ Day with the Nassau Stakes (Thursday), King George Day (Friday) and Stewards’ Cup Day (Saturday).

The course is close enough to the coast that sea fog can roll in, and the going can change from one day to the next.

The big races

Goodwood Cup (Tuesday). Group 1 over 2m, for three-year-olds and up. First run in 1812 and restored to Group 1 status in 2017. Prize money in 2026 was £500,000. Stradivarius won four in a row from 2017 to 2020. It is the next big staying target after the Ascot Gold Cup, at a trip almost half a mile shorter.

Sussex Stakes (Wednesday). Group 1 over 1m, for three-year-olds and up. The three-year-olds carry 9st 2lb against 9st 10lb for their elders, with 3lb for fillies and mares. First run in 1841, it became a mile race for three-year-olds in 1878. Frankel won it in 2011 and 2012. Prize money in 2026 was £1 million, the richest race of the week. The weight-for-age allowance is the heart of the betting argument every year.

Nassau Stakes (Thursday). Group 1 over 1m 1f 197y, for fillies and mares aged three and up. First run in 1840, Group 1 since 1999. Prize money in 2026 was £600,000. Recent winners Opera Singer (2024), Whirl (2025) and Diamond Necklace (2026) were all owned by Sue Magnier.

King George Stakes (Friday). Group 2 over 5f, for three-year-olds and up. Battaash won it four times from 2017 to 2020. Khaadem won in 2022 for Charles Hills. A pure speed test down the hill.

Stewards’ Cup (Saturday). A 6f handicap for three-year-olds and up, first run in 1840. Fields run to 28. Commanche Falls won it in 2021 and 2022. It is the betting race of the week and the one where the draw and pace notes below earn their keep.

Also on the card. The Golden Mile handicap and the Group 3 Thoroughbred Stakes, both on Friday.

Trends worth knowing

These notes are sourced from the Racing Post course guide and Geegeez’s draw analysis, both linked above.

Sprints on the straight course. The 6f course is uphill for the first furlong and then downhill. In smaller fields the stands’ side, high numbers, is generally favoured, and low-drawn horses can get stuck in the middle. In the Stewards’ Cup, with 20-plus runners, the bias is weaker: the low numbers can use the far rail and the high numbers the stands’ rail, so either extreme can pay, but the middle is a poor place to be. Geegeez’s run-style data for 5f and 6f handicaps with 12 or more runners found the draw itself “very fair” but front-runners clearly outperformed every other run style. Look for horses that can lead or sit second.

Round course, 7f and 1m. Low draws are clearly favoured. The 7f start is on a right-handed bend and high draws get caught wide. On the Friday and Saturday of the festival the bias is strongest because the cutaway rail is not in use, so that applies to the Golden Mile.

Pace generally. The downhill stretches let the field freewheel, and horses coming from off the pace often struggle to find a run. Runners also tend to drift towards the stands’ rail looking for better ground.

For anything beyond this, use the site’s draw and pace tools and read /guides/draw-bias-explained. Check the going on the day.

Betting notes

Ante-post or day-of. Trainers wait for the going here before committing, so early bets carry real non-runner risk. If you bet ante-post, prefer non-runner no bet (NRNB) offers. See /guides/non-runners-and-your-bet.

Stewards’ Cup each-way. A 28-runner handicap is where extra places make the biggest difference. Compare places and the fraction together. Run the sums with /guides/extra-places-explained, and wait for the draw before you bet.

Rule 4. Morning withdrawals on going grounds mean deductions. See /guides/rule-4-deductions.

Getting there and tickets

Goodwood is reached by road from Chichester; travel, parking and shuttle details are on the official site. For 2026 the course listed Lennox Enclosure tickets from £21 and Gordon Enclosure from £47, with the Richmond Enclosure limited to Goodwood Horseracing Club members during the festival. Tickets and the timetable are at https://www.goodwood.com/horseracing/qatar-goodwood-festival/.
